Block Party Blog: Tory McCutcheon

Sept. 20, 2011

Sept. 20: This past weekend was a turning point in our season. Coming off of a great preseason, we had to change gears and establish ourselves in conference play. It was a great opportunity to start at 0-0. We had to put not only some tough losses behind us, but also the wins and successes. We were starting fresh.

With UTEP being our first conference match of the season, we knew it wouldn't be easy. Not only because of the grittiness of conference play, but because this was a new UTEP team. They had significantly improved over last season and had a great preseason of their own. As a team we came out strong and assertive and were able to contain their fast offense. Our defense was insane and led us to a 3-0 sweep.

On Saturday we faced FIU, a well-established team with great talent. We came out strong and went up 2 sets to none, but FIU battled back to push into a 5th set. Unfortunately we just couldn't put it away and lost in a nail-biter. We definitely know what we need to work on, and we know there are tons of things we can fix in the gym this coming week.

Nonetheless, this weekend was a great start to conference and a good chance to tighten up our individual performances. We'll keep trucking this week and we can't wait to face SMU and Tulsa at home this weekend! Tradition starts now.

Go KNIGHTS!
