Summer Kicks: A.J. Nelson

June 28, 2011

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The 2010 season was a breakout year for the entire UCF men's soccer program. Several players made huge impacts and elevated their game, making the program's rise to a top 20 team in the nation possible. Ponte Vedra native A.J. Nelson was one of those players.

Fourth on the team in scoring, Nelson notched four goals and recorded four assists for 12 points. Often overlooked for the more flashy numbers of some of his teammates or the leadership roles bestowed upon others, Nelson quietly went about putting together a solid sophomore season in 2010 to help lift his team and the program to new heights.

The top UCF goal of the season came from the foot of Spencer Scott to take down No. 5 SMU, 2-1, at home on Oct. 2. Lost in the fray following the goal and subsequent celebration was the brilliant pass from Nelson at midfield that set up the goal. Just an example of the important role Nelson played without receiving the spotlight.

Now headed into his junior season in 2011, Nelson will be a key offensive player for the Knights if they are to enjoy the successes they had in 2010.
