TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Battling Florida State for the first time in the regular season since 1993, UCF's offense fell victim to junior left-handed starting pitcher Sean Gilmartin who guided the No. 6 Seminoles to an 8-0 win Friday in Tallahassee. The Knights, who only trailed 3-0 in the seventh inning, saw their record move to 28-18 on the season.
The maturation of sophomore lefty Brian Adkins continued Friday vs. FSU (35-11). A spot-starter as a freshman and midweek starter to begin 2011, the Orlando native made his fifth-straight weekend start and lasted 6.0 innings. It was Adkins' ninth-consecutive start in which he tossed at least 6.0 innings, and that includes outings vs. non-conference opponents Florida State, Boston College and Miami.
Following a scoreless first for both programs, Rafael Lopez took advantage of the short porch in right by sending a high fly ball over the 20-foot-high fence for a solo homer and a 1-0 lead for FSU in the second. One inning later, Adkins worked into trouble when runners reached second and third with no outs, and Sherman Johnson drove them both in with a double to the gap in right-center.
Faced with a 3-0 deficit, UCF had a difficult task of attempting a comeback vs. Gilmartin, who entered Friday with a 7-1 record and a 1.48 ERA. The Knights did put a small threat together in the fourth on singles from Ronnie Richardson and Jonathan Griffin to get runners at the corners with one away. However Gilmartin easily retired the next two Knights to escape.
Adkins was able to keep it at a three-run margin by sitting down the Seminoles in order in the fourth, stranding runners at second and third with one down in the fifth and leaving two on base again in the sixth. But the Knights could not provide him with any run support at the plate, and FSU added five runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Gilmartin closed out his performance with 7.0 innings, surrendering just three hits while striking out 11.
The three-game series at FSU resumes Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on Sun Sports and 740-AM.
