ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Guiding UCF to a 2-1 record in the Conference USA Championship presented by Trustmark this past week in Pearl, Miss., senior Jonathan Griffin and sophomore D.J. Hicks were voted onto the C-USA All-Tournament Team. The squad was announced following Saturday night's title game where No. 1 Rice topped No. 6 Houston, 4-3, in 10 innings.
It was the first time the Knights had more than one player earn a spot on the C-USA All-Tournament Team.
A native of Altamonte Springs, Hicks went 5-for-12 for a .417 average in three games against Memphis, UAB and Rice. The designated hitter drove in three and scored two runs, and in his final outing vs. the Owls he was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Griffin also collected five hits in the tournament, capping off his week with six RBI and five runs. In the opener vs. Memphis, the first baseman went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and a mammoth three-run homer that put the game away in the seventh in a 16-9 win. One day later, Griffin crushed a two-out, three-run home run to almost the same spot in left-center to erase a 4-3 deficit, lifting the Black and Gold to a 6-4 triumph over UAB.
Hicks, Griffin and the Knights (38-21) are looking ahead to their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2004, and will discover what three teams will join them for Regionals when the field of 64 is announced during the NCAA Selection Show Monday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN.
