ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF assistant head coach Michelle Chatman has been selected as one of three assistant coaches for the 2011 USA Volleyball Women's National A2 Program as announced by USA Volleyball.
"I am honored to have the opportunity extended to me to serve as an assistant coach for the USA A2 National Team," Chatman said. "A position of this magnitude will expand my knowledge in every aspect of the game. To be honest, none of this would have been possible without the guidance of my head coach, previous coaches and mentors. I am looking forward to interacting with some of the top players and coaches in the sport."
The U.S. Women's National A2 Program will take place from May 23-June 1 in Dallas. A total of 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competition in the 2011 USA Volleyball Open National Championships in the Open Division from May 28-31.
"Michelle has worked extremely hard and put herself in a position to earn these types of appointments. This is one of the biggest positions that USA Volleyball hires on a yearly basis," UCF head coach Todd Dagenais said. "Not only can Michelle share her wealth of knowledge as a premiere Division I volleyball player, but she is also a fantastic athlete and well-rounded player that can still show the athletes how to do something if they are visual learners."
Chatman will work with head coaches Geoff Carlston (Ohio State), Fran Flory (LSU) and Kelly Sheffield (Dayton) as an assistant with the program, while also working alongside fellow assistant coaches Kim Jagd and Brian Hosfeld.
The 36 players will be divided into three 12-player rosters for the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. USA Volleyball considers the event as the National Championship for the sport of volleyball in the United States.
Athletes selected to the U.S. Women's National A2 Program were selected from the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 25-27 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. A record 204 athletes participated in the three-day tryout, representing 81 different college programs.
