MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF softball team was only able to tally two hits as it dropped its Conference USA series finale at Memphis (31-10, 11-6 C-USA), 8-0, in five innings Saturday afternoon at Tiger Softball Complex. The loss dropped the Knights' record to 18-28 on the season and 8-10 in league play.
Marissa Menendez (Tampa, Fla.) and Natalie Land (Mayo, Fla.) accounted for the Black and Gold's only pair of hits, with Menendez posting a single in the second inning and Land recording a single in the fourth frame.
Senior Diana Rojas (Miami, Fla.) was tagged with the loss in the circle to fall to 7-11 on the year. The hurler allowed five runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 3.0 innings pitched. Fellow senior Ashley Schmitt (Tampa, Fla.) entered the game in relief for the Knights in the fourth inning, allowing three runs, one of which was earned, on one hit and a walk in 1.1 innings of work.
Memphis put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning, before tagging two more on in the fourth on a two-run home run by Kailey Kassner.
The Tigers scored on a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth inning, before the game came to an end due to the eight-run rule when the home team scored a pair of runs on a one-out throwing error in the same frame.
The Knights return to action April 30-May 1 when they host Southern Miss for a three-game C-USA series at the UCF Softball Complex. Sunday's contest will also serve as Senior Day for UCF's five seniors, Abby McClain, Tiffany Lane, Diana Rojas, Tawny Swan and Ashley Schmitt.
