ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Another one of the nation's premier prep players has joined the UCF men's basketball program as Kevin Ware, who is ranked among the top guards in the country, signed a grant-in-aid Wednesday, head coach Donnie Jones announced. Ware, a native of Conyers, Ga., is rated as the No. 14 shooting guard and the No. 56 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com.
Ware joins a UCF recruiting class that features center Michael Chandler, guard/forward Rod Days and forwards Wayne Martin and Kasey Wilson. The group is already being ranked as one of the top-25 classes in the country.
As a senior, the 6-foot-5 Ware averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 assists in leading Rockdale County High School to the Georgia Class AAAA championship game. He was recently named to the Georgia Sportswriters Association Class AAAA All-State First Team.
"Kevin is an amazing athlete who is very versatile with his ability to play both guard positions," Jones said. "He is a big guard who will excel in our up-tempo style of play. Kevin is a student of the game who is a team player and knows how to make others better."
Scout.com ranks Ware as the 25th-best shooting guard in the country. A member of the exclusive ESPNU Top 100, Ware is rated as the No. 27 guard and No. 93 overall senior by ESPN.
At Rockdale County, he played for coach Alvin Williams. On the AAU level, Ware starred for the Atlanta Celtics. As a junior, Ware averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 assists and was an all-state second team selection for Rockdale County.
Ware will join a UCF program that enjoyed great success in 2010-11 during Jones' first campaign in Orlando. The Knights won 21 games, recorded signature non-conference wins over 16th-ranked Florida, Miami, Princeton and USF, entered the national rankings for the first time in program history and won a pair of postseason games in the CBI.
Fans can make sure that they are at the UCF Arena to watch the Knights play in 2011-12. Season ticket deposits are currently being accepted by calling the UCF Athletics ticket office at (407) UCF-1000.
