WINTER PARK, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF novice rowing team opened its 2011 season Saturday by taking home the Yeuell Trophy in its first-career sprint race at the Metro Cup hosted by Rollins College in Winter Park.
The first varsity eight boat, manned by Meghan Martin, Dayna Bentel, Karly Brown, Kaitlin Meadows, Liz McKinney, Liz Janiak, Aubrey Kuperman, Meredyth Ring and Jessie Seay, defeated the host Tars in the event finale with a time of 7:59.0 to win the Yeuell Trophy.
"I'm very pleased with the performance of our novices today," head novice coach Joel Furtek said. "Rollins hosted an excellent regatta but couldn't control the winds. All our boats did a pretty good job of handling the conditions, but the first eight in particular rose above them and put in an excellent race. I'm proud that they were able to bring the Yeuell Trophy home to Lake Pickett.We're now more motivated than ever to attack our spring training camp this week."
UCF's second novice four boat, made up of Martin, Bentel, Blaine Lewis, Nancy Nasser and Liz Anderson, started the action for the Black and Gold at 8:40 a.m., placing third behind Villanova and Duquesne with a time of 8:43.9.
In the varsity four event, the Black and Gold also placed third against three varsity boats, finishing the race with a time of 9:07.9. Villanova won the race in 8:42.4, followed by Rollins in second in 9:01.1
The third novice four and the second novice eight teams finished their respective events in 10:30.4 and 8:53.2.
The rowing squad returns to the water March 12 when it hosts Jacksonville in a scrimmage at the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center on Lake Pickett.
