ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team battled hard Saturday, but was unable to record an upset at Sanlando Park as the Knights fell 5-1 to No. 34 Miami. The teams did not play doubles due to rain.
UCF (5-6) got a victory at the No. 1 spot from senior Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla.). Facing Waylon Chin, Schwartz recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win. The Knights had the opportunity to pick up a point at No. 2, but Miami's Christian Blcoker held off freshman Erik Brunskog (Linkoping, Sweden), 4-6, 7-6, 6-1.
Freshman Leonel Vivas (Caracas, Venezuela) battled hard at No. 4, but was unable to top Carl Sunberg, falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Miami improved to 6-3 with the win.
"Today we fought hard, but came up just short," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said. "It was a very tight match and we lost key points at key times, which ended up being the difference. Miami is a good team, but we stayed with them and had our chances."
The match was originally scheduled to be played Friday on the UCF campus, but was postponed due to rain.
The Knights were facing a nationally-ranked squad for the fourth time this season.
UCF will return to action Sunday against Conference USA foe Tulane at noon at the UCF Tennis Complex. Admission is free for the match.
