ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - It continues to be a record season for the UCF women's indoor track & field team as Caryl Smith Gilbert has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Women's Head Coach of the Year.
Smith Gilbert received the honor after leading the Knights to their first Conference USA indoor title two weeks ago in Houston. For guiding the team to its first indoor title, Smith Gilbert was named the 2011 C-USA Women's Indoor Coach of the Year.
"I am blessed to earn such a great award from my peers," Smith Gilbert said. "All of the candidates have done a wonderful job with their teams this season. Our team has worked hard and sacrificed a lot this year so I give them the credit for this award in particular. "
This is the second time that Smith Gilbert has been honored as the USTFCCCA South Region Head Coach of the Year after being so honored during the outdoor season in 2009.
UCF reached new heights this season at its climbed as high as No. 8 in the national polls, marking the first time that the Knights made an appearance in the top 10. Currently, the team is ranked No. 9 headed to the NCAA National Championship meet this weekend at Texas A&M.
