JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team improved to 2-0 Saturday as the Knights picked up a 4-3 victory over Jacksonville at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex. Junior Joe Delinks (Falmouth, Mass.) clinched the win for UCF with a triumph at No. 4 singles.
The Knights took two of three doubles matches against the Dolphins (0-1) to take the first point of the day. At No. 1, Delinks and senior Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla.) topped Lance Lvovsky and Fernando Bano Lopez, 8-5. Facing Matthew Hansen and Logan Shamli at No. 2, junior Eugene Dolgovykh (Palm Coast, Fla.) joined freshman Matthew Zachary (Bossier City, La.) for an 8-5 victory.
"I thought we did very well at one and two doubles. That was key for us," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said. "It was a competitive match, which is what we expected. It is always tough to win on the road."
Delinks secured the win for UCF by handling Hansen, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 4. The Knights also picked up victories at No. 3 from freshman Leonel Vivas (Caracas, Venezuela) and at No. 6 where sophomore Mario Samson (Miami, Fla.) was victorious.
The Knights will return to action Friday at No. 7 Florida.
