ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Sean Johnson, former UCF men's soccer goalkeeper and current member of the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer, earned his first international cap as a member of the United States Men's National Team. Johnson played the second half of a friendly with Chile on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Johnson played two seasons with the Knights before moving on to the U.S. Under-20 National Team to compete in the FIFA U-20 World Cup prior to the 2009 season. He was named UCF's team MVP for his efforts as a sophomore in 2008, recording 108 saves for the season, including a program-record 14 against SMU on Oct. 14.
"He (Johnson) continues to impress me with his desire to improve and accomplish the lofty goals he has set for himself," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "You cannot help but feel great pride in knowing you coached such a determined young man.
"I am looking forward to watching him with the Fire this season as well as the National Team."
The Knights are coming off arguably their best season in program history, spending much of the season nationally ranked and earning a berth in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament against College Cup finalist Michigan.
