ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Having used last week's exhibition game against Flagler as a learning experience, the UCF men's basketball team is now focused on its season opener. The Knights will open the year, and the Donnie Jones era at UCF, on Friday, hosting West Florida at the UCF Arena.
A positive atmosphere has surrounded the Knights throughout the preseason, and sophomore guard/forward David Diakite expects that to continue this week as the team gets ready to face the Argonauts. Diakite thinks that the squad's strong chemistry will be key in 2010-11.
"Everyone gets along with each other," he said. "The coaching staff is great. There is a great feeling going around. Everyone is excited about the season. We can't wait."
Since Jones was hired as UCF's head coach in late March, interest in the program has increased. Season ticket sales have already eclipsed last season's numbers, and Jones has become a fixture on the local media scene.
Knights like senior guard Taylor Young are hoping for a big crowd Friday evening at the UCF Arena. Young senses that there is a big buzz for the start of the season.
"It seems like the people that I have talked to are excited about the basketball season. So are we. Hopefully we can carry that excitement into the first couple of games and really get the season off to a good start," Young said.
The game against West Florida is the first of three-straight at home to begin the year for the Knights.
UCF will play 17 total games at the UCF Arena in 2010-11. Season tickets, which start at just $96 and include a free Knightmare t-shirt, are currently available by calling (407) UCF-1000 or by visiting UCFAthletics.com.
