ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team concluded its home tournament in fine fashion Sunday as a pair of Knights claimed singles titles at the UCF Invitational. The event was the last of the fall for the Knights.
In the Black Draw championship match, freshman Matthew Gladstone (Surfside, Fla.) held off Oliver Webb of Florida Atlantic, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The title was the second of the fall for Gladstone, who also took a draw championship at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational in Winter Park in early October.
Facing Matthijis Verdam of Georgia Southern in the Gold Draw consolation final, sophomore Mario Samson (Miami, Fla.) picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win. Six of the seven Knights who played Sunday were victorious. Senior Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla.), junior Joe Delinks (Falmouth, Mass.) and freshmen Erik Brunskog (Linkoping, Sweden) and Leonel Vivas (Caracas, Venezuela) all won consolation matches.
"We played better today," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said. "Matt (Gladstone) has won two tournaments. He had a really impressive fall for a freshman. We ended the fall on a positive note. Going into the spring, we need to continue to work and get better."
The UCF Invitational began on Friday at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The tournament was the fifth of the fall for Cashman's team. The Knights will open their spring season on Jan. 23, hosting Georgia State.
