ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Watch Jarvis Davis on the court for only a few seconds and his top strength is clearly evident. The freshman point guard is incredibly fast, which should only help as he embarks on his collegiate career.
The Columbia, S.C., native is quick with the ball in his hand. He excels at driving to the basket and finding open teammates, and is also electric running a fast break. Davis seems to be a perfect fit for new head coach Donnie Jones' up-tempo system, which has the point guard looking forward to the start of the 2010-11 season.
"It is really exciting," Davis said of the Knights' style of play. "It plays to my strengths. I like to drive and kick. I think I can open up a lot of things for myself and my team."
Davis knows that before he gets to run the UCF offense, he will have to prove to Jones and the UCF coaching staff that he can make good decisions and take care of the ball.
"You have to show coach first that you can make smart plays, and be able to hit jump shots," he said. "When I show him that I can do that, maybe I can have a lot of freedom."
Since arriving at UCF prior to the first summer session, Davis has worked hard to improve his jump shot. He says that he is attempting around 600 shots per day, and hopes that his hard work pays off during the season.
"It has gotten pretty good. I have been working on it a lot," he said. "Every night and every day, I come in before workouts and shoot."
Davis and the Knights will open the regular season on Nov. 12. Season tickets, which start at just $96 and include a free Knightmare t-shirt, are currently available by calling (407) UCF-1000 or by visiting UCFAthletics.com.
