WINTER PARK, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team concluded play at the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational in nearby Winter Park Sunday with a pair of titles. Freshman Matthew Gladstone (Surfside, Fla.) claimed the Flight B Singles "Blue" Draw crown, and joined fellow freshman Leonel Vivas (Caracas, Venezuela) for the Flight B Doubles "Gold" Draw title.
Gladstone took his singles crown with a strong showing in a super-tiebreaker as he got past Simon Raagaard of Barry, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8. Gladstone won four singles matches during the tournament, which began Friday.
"He took two titles, which is impressive," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said of Gladstone. "It was a tough tournament. I am very happy for him. He has worked hard and this is huge for his confidence."
In doubles, Gladstone and Vivas defeated Chris Herbert and Nick Rowlands, 8-3, in the championship match. To start the day, the pair eased past Barry's Ruben Penate and Rafael Mittag, 8-3, in the semifinals.
The event was the third of the fall for the Knights. Rollins hosted the tournament. Other schools that participated included Jacksonville, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman.
Members of the UCF squad will return to action on Oct. 21 when play begins at the ITA Regionals in Gainesville.
