HANAHAN, S.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - Senior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) shot a two-under-par 70 to tie for second place overall and pace the UCF women's golf team in the opening round of the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C.
UCF's team score of 298 (+10) placed the team in ninth place out of 21 schools competing in a strong field. North Carolina is in first place by a four stroke margin at 285 (-3). The 54-hole event continues through Tuesday.
Detlefsen got out to a fast start with three birdies on the front nine. After a bogey on 11, she parred 13 to get back to minus-two and made par for the final five holes for a 70. The score leaves her just a stroke behind Courtney Gunter of North Carolina, who shot a 69 (-3), for the best score in the 110-golfer field.
Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) and Kaitlyn Price (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) each fired a 75 (+3) to tie for 38th place overall and second amongst the Knights. Price finished strong to earn her 75, birdying the final two holes. Sunny Harris (Pensacola, Fla.) continued a good run to open the fall of 2010 with a 78 (+6) that scored for UCF and placed her tied for 69th in the field. Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) wrapped up the UCF golfers on Sunday with an 85 (+13).
Play continues near Charleston with single rounds on both Monday and Tuesday. UCF's first tee time on Monday is a 8:09 a.m. when the Knights will be paired with Kentucky and UNC Greensboro.
