When UCF (1-0) has the ball
Last Saturday, against South Dakota the Knights opened the season with a potent offensive attack, totaling 472 yards of offense. It was the largest output of total yards since 1998 against Louisiana Tech. Career highs by running back Jonathan Davis (20 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown), and wide receiver A.J. Guyton (eight catches for 127 yards and a touchdown) sparked an offense that tallied points on six out of eight possessions. Quarterback Rob Calabrese also had a career night, completing 12 of 15 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown. The contest marked the third-consecutive regular season game that the Knights reached 200 yards on the ground and in the air. The Wolfpack return an experienced linebacking corps. including team captain Nate Irving who had a productive 2008 season but missed 2009 due to injuries suffered in a car accident. The secondary is filled with youth but comes with some experience led by cornerback C.J. Wilson (one interception in 2009), who appeared in all 12 contests last season, starting seven.
When NCSU (1-0) has the ball
Led by quarterback Russell Wilson the Wolfpack displayed some of their offensive firepower totaling 480 yards of total offense and scoring on eight-consecutive possessions against Western Carolina last week. Wilson completed 21 of 31 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns. The effort was his fifth career 300- yard passing performance. The ground attack was led by safety turned halfback Dean Haynes who amassed 69 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Wide Receiver Jarvis Williams returns home to Orlando (Jones High School) and looks to add to his 15 career touchdown catches. The Knights defense looks to continue the dominance it displayed in 2009, leading Conference USA in rushing defense, total defense, sacks and tackles for loss. Defensive end Bruce Miller is poised to add on to his 27 career sacks and is tied for ninth all-time in the category in the state of Florida.
