ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Classes started on Monday on the UCF campus, and while members of the women's basketball team are already focusing on academics, they will have the opportunity to start learning more on the court soon. Later this week, the Knights will begin a series of individual workouts inside the UCF Practice Facility.
Head coach Joi Williams and her staff are permitted to spend up to two hours per week with their players, working on individual development. UCF's entire team was on campus for the Summer B session, but the coaching staff could not spend any time on the court with the Knights. As a result, Williams is looking forward to starting the workouts.
"Our individuals are a chance to work on fundamentals," she said. "You can also get a lot of repetitions and really work on technique. We will do offensive and defensive work and also get in some conditioning."
UCF has four freshmen, and the workouts will give them an opportunity to learn from the coaching staff for the first time. The coaches will also be able to find out more about the rookies as well.
"When you get freshmen, you have an idea through the recruiting process of what they can do," Williams said. "I think once we get started, it is a continuous evaluation opportunity for us to see where they are after they have done six weeks of summer school. It is a chance for us to really try to see where our kids are as far as retaining what they know."
What can UCF's returnees expect? Simply time to work on their own games and get ready for the 2010-11 campaign.
"We are not changing a lot of things as far as what we are looking for. We are just trying to refine and polish up on some of the things that we are going to continue to do this year," Williams said.
