ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Connor Arendell (Cape Coral, Fla.) of the UCF men's golf team is headed back to the U.S. Amateur Championship. On Tuesday Arendell, who is entering his junior campaign with the Knights, finished second at qualifying at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero to earn a spot in the championship for the fifth time.
Arendell carded a 2-under 70 during Tuesday's final round and finished the 36-hole event at 143 (-1). Along with Samuel Chavez, who won the event at 4-under 140, Arendell advanced to the amateur championship, which will be held at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., in late August.
In 2009, Arendell advanced to the round of 16 in match play at the amateur championship.
Arendell has played very well this summer. In July, he tied for third at the prestigious Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta. Competing at the Florida State Amateur Championship in Orlando in June, Arendell tied for fifth.
In 2009-10, Arendell appeared in all 12 tournaments for the Knights. His best performance came at the Conference USA Championship in nearby Sorrento. He tied for second at 2-under 214, helping UCF take the conference crown for the second-straight year. Arendell was in his first campaign in Orlando after transferring from Louisville.
