ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF men's basketball head coach Donnie Jones announced the addition of another talented newcomer Monday as Tristan Spurlock has transferred to UCF from Virginia. The 6-foot-8 small forward will sit out the 2010-11 campaign due to NCAA rules, and will then have three years of eligibility remaining with the Knights.
A native of Woodbridge, Va., Spurlock was a top-100 recruit as a senior at Word of Life Christian Academy. Spurlock was slotted at No. 80 on the ESPNU 100 top prospects list, and Rivals.com ranked him as the 16th-best small forward in the country.
"Tristan is a really talented player and we are excited about his addition to our team," Jones said. "He brings great versatility and length. I think he will really fit in with our up-tempo style of play."
As a freshman at Virginia, he appeared in 13 games, including six in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and averaged 2.4 points in 4.6 minutes per contest.
After averaging 23.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 blocked shots as a senior in high school in 2008-09, he was named Mr. Basketball in Virginia by the Roanoke Times. An all-state selection, Spurlock participated in the prestigious Capital Classic after his senior year and totaled 15 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals in the all-star game.
Spurlock is the fourth Division I transfer to join the Knights since Jones was hired as the head coach in late March. Tom Herzog, a center from Michigan State, will be eligible immediately, while forward Josh Crittle from Oregon and guard Jeff Jordan from Illinois will both sit out this season alongside Spurlock.
