ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF will host Southern Miss on Nov. 13 at noon for what will be the Knights' last home game of the year. UCF looks to avenge a close loss in Hattiesburg last season and send its seniors out with a crucial win in the conference standings.
Last year, under second-year head coach Larry Fedora, Southern Miss went 7-6 and earned a berth in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, the second straight year that the Golden Eagles have gone 7-6 and played in the New Orleans Bowl. Southern Miss looks to take another step forward in 2010 as the Golden Eagles are picked by many to be UCF's toughest rival within Conference USA's East Division.
Offensive Player to Watch
This season the Golden Eagles will look for leadership and big plays from junior wide receiver DeAndre Brown. Last season Brown reeled 47 catches for 785 yards and nine touchdowns despite missing two games. Brown was the leader for USM in all statistical categories for wide receivers. The electrifying 6-foot-6 wide out provides matchup problems for most defenses and a massive red zone target for senior quarterback Martevious Young.
Defensive Player to Watch
Redshirt junior linebacker Korey Williams is coming off a strong season where he led the Golden Eagles with 121 tackles. Williams also led the team with 7.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries. In tandem with linebacker Ronnie Thornton, this linebacking duo was responsible for 21.5 tackles for a loss, five forced fumbles and 235 tackles.
Knights Hope to Fly With Golden Eagles
Southern Miss has given UCF fits since joining Conference USA as the Knights are just 1-4 all-time against their divisional rivals from Hattiesburg. Last fall, a slow start proved to be too much for the Knights as a late rally fell short in a 26-19 loss. The last meeting at Bright House Networks Stadium saw Southern Miss come away with a 17-6 win on Homecoming in a defensive struggle. UCF will look to put both of those losses behind itself in a game that will likely go a long way towards determining who plays for the C-USA title three weeks later and where.
