ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF women's tennis head coach Stephanie Nickitas recently joined former top-ranked WTA doubles player Gigi Fernandez to film an episode of Tennis Channel Academy at the Racquet Club at Heathrow. The show is set to air in November on The Tennis Channel.
"It was a tremendous opportunity to go out there and help Gigi as an assistant to work on doubles formations, strategies and tactics," said Nickitas, who was a two-time NCAA doubles champion with the University of Florida. "It was an honor to be in the presence of a great champion, and I was very excited to be a part of the show."
Fernandez won 17 Grand Slam doubles titles, 69 overall doubles crowns and two singles titles at the professional level. She is also the only Puerto Rican to win an Olympic gold medal, partnering with Mary Jo Fernandez to earn doubles gold in 1992 and 1996.
Nickitas will be entering her fourth season with the Knights in 2010-11, and is coming off a 13-7 campaign a year ago. She guided UCF to a fifth seed in the Conference USA Championship, which was its highest seed since joining the league in 2005-06.
