ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Three former Knights, all native Canadians, are ready to take to the field as the CFL opens its 2010 season with a Canada Day doubleheader on Thursday, July 1, our neighbor to the north's national holiday.
The season opens at 7 p.m. when former UCF defensive lineman Keith Shologan's Saskatchewan Roughriders play host to the Montreal Alouettes in the rematch of a thrilling 28-27 Grey Cup championship game that was settled as time expired. In the night cap of Thursday's Canada Day twin-bill, former UCF offensive linemen Cedric Gagne-Marcoux and Taylor Robertson, both of the Toronto Argonauts, head to the foothills of the Canadian Rockies to face the Calgary Stampeders.
Gagne-Marcoux will line up at left guard during his first season in Toronto. Gagne-Marcoux was a first round draft choice of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2006 and played for the club from 2007-09. He started all 18 games as a rookie in 2007 before injuries hampered him the following year. The Ticats' head coach in 2007-08 was Charlie Taaffe, the current offensive coordinator at UCF. Gagne-Marcoux showed some personality while recording this video for fans at the Argos' recent Fan Day.
An eight-year veteran entering his fourth season in Toronto, Robertson has been named the Argonauts' Outstanding Lineman for each of the past three seasons from his right guard post. He started his CFL career with four years in Calgary, helping the Stampeders to the 2005 and 2006 playoffs before that club traded him eastward prior to the 2007 season.
A first round pick by the Roughriders in 2008, Shologan is beginning his third year in Regina. He suited up for all 18 games last fall and started 13 of them at defensive tackle, including the Grey Cup Final against Montreal during which he made a pair of stops and recovered a fumble. Shologan had a total of 27 tackles last season including three sacks.
