ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For the second-straight season, sophomore Chelsey Lauzon (Rockford, Mich.) of the UCF rowing team was honored with a spot on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-South Region First Team, the organization announced Tuesday.
With her selection to the all-region squad, Lauzon will now be eligible for the All-America awards selection following the NCAA Rowing Championships, which will be held May 28-30 on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coach's recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must be eligible student-athletes who have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.
The sophomore was also selected to the CRCA All-South Region First Team in 2009.
Including her all-region honor, the CRCA also announced Tuesday that Lauzon and six additional members of the UCF rowing team wre named CRCA Scholar-Athletes.
Besides Lauzon, Sheilah Abadines, Sasha Baxter, Christina Bechtold, Nicole Hoag, Sam Miller and Leah VanLear earned the distinction for maintaining a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better for their careers.
Student-athletes were also required to have met all eligibility rules as defined by their institution, be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and have rowed in a minimum of 75-percent of the team's races.
This season, Lauzon helped lead the varsity eight team to second-place honors at the inaugural Conference USA Rowing Championships, while the squad also claimed a fourth-place South Region finish at the South/Central Regional Championship held in conjunction with the C-USA event and 11th place overall honors at the regatta.
For her performance during the event, Lauzon earned a spot on the inaugural All-C-USA Team with fellow teammate Jordynn Pauls.
Overall, the sophomore led the varsity eight to six victories in 2010, which included wins over No. 18 Iowa and Columbia and Navy, who were both receiving votes in the CRCA/USARowing poll at the time of the events.
Lauzon holds the fastest erg time on the squad and has already been selected as a captain for the 2010-11 season.
Following her freshman campaign, Lauzon garnered an invitation to the USRowing Freshman Camp.
