ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The first three events are in the books after day two Friday of the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the UCF Track & Field Complex. The league's signature track and field event is being held in Orlando for the first time since UCF joined C-USA.
UCF junior Samantha Shields (Orlando, Fla.) earned the Knight's first point of the championship with an eighth-place finish Friday in the heptathlon. With one point, UCF sits in ninth place with numerous events still to be decided during a jam-packed weekend.
UTEP and UAB sit in a tie for first on the top of the women's standings after three events with 22 points. East Carolina ranks third (20 points) while Tulsa sits in fourth (17 points). Three-time defending champion Rice (13) rounds out the top five.
On the men's side, Rice (30) is just one point ahead of second-place Tulsa (29) while UTEP (19), Memphis (14) and Houston (10) round out the first five.
Saturday's full slate of events begins with the finals in seven field events, including the discus, long jump and pole vault on the women's side. The men's javelin will kick off the day at 1 p.m. while the discus is the first women's event at 3:30 p.m.
On the running side, the prelims will be held in seven events on both the men's and women's sides beginning at 6 p.m. The finals of the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase will round out the evening at 9:15 and 9:35 p.m. respectively.
The championships continue through Sunday at the C-USA Championships. Tickets are currently available on UCFAthletics.com and Ticketmaster and can also be purchased in person at the event. Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $7 for youth each day, and all session tickets cost $25 for adults and $15 for youths.
