ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF track and field team travels to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in one of the signature events on the Knights' schedule, the prestigious Penn Relays. The Penn Relays Carnival, which takes place at historic Franklin Field, is considered the world's largest annual track and field meet and will be held this weekend from Thursday to Saturday.
This year's meet brings added significance to the Knights because of the success the squad had at the meet in 2009. UCF captured the title in the shuttle hurdles competition and claimed the coveted first-place trophy a season ago while shattering the school record in the event. UCF's time of 54.07 bested the previous school record by over one second and also earned the squad an ACCUSPLIT Relay Award for having the nation's best shuttle hurdles relay team.
The Knights also had a strong performance a season ago from the sprint medley relay team, which broke the school record by over four seconds. Current senior Tiki James (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Jackie Coward (Knoxville, Tenn.) both qualified for the Championships of America 100m hurdles final, finishing eighth and ninth respectively.
This year, over 1,300 different high school, college and professional team from both across the country and around the world are scheduled to compete in the meet, which is hosted by Penn.
