ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's tennis team is set to begin play at the 2010 Conference USA Championship beginning Friday in Houston at Rice's Jake Hess Tennis Stadium. The Knights (11-7) earned the third seed and will take on No. 6 East Carolina (18-7) at 6 p.m. Eastern that evening.
Since UCF became a part of C-USA five years ago, the squad has never been seeded as high as third. The Knights are headed into the tournament after facing several nationally ranked teams this past spring and winning their final two matches.
The C-USA Championship features four teams in the top-75 of the ITA rankings: No. 36 Tulsa, No. 41 Rice, No. 70 UCF and No. 72 SMU. The field also consists of five of the top-125 players in the nation and four of the top-90 doubles pairings in the nation.
If the Knights defeat East Carolina, UCF will meet the winner of the No. 2 Rice-No. 7 Southern Miss contest in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Eastern Saturday. The championship match is slated for 1 p.m. Eastern Sunday. The champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
