HATTIESBURG, Miss. (UCFAthletics.com) - Four out of the UCF women's golf team's five participants matched or bettered their opening round scores in today's second round of the Conference USA Championship. The event is being played through Tuesday and hosted by Southern Miss at the par-71, 6,144-yard Cranebreak Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Behind this individual improvement, the Knights shot a 301 as a team, nine strokes better than Sunday's opening round 310. Overall stands in ninth place with a 611. There is little drama atop the leaderboard as Tulane leads the field by 11 strokes with a 573.
Senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) topped UCF on the day with her 73, a full 10 strokes better than her opening round 83. Tomko's score tied her for 11th best in the entire field on Monday. Three Knights carded a 76 on Monday, including junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) who is in a tie for 12th place over and first amongst UCF golfers on the heels of her 72 yesterday.
Freshmen Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) and Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) were the other Knights to shoot a 76 today and stand second and third on the team, respectively. Sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) shot a 79 on Monday, paring six strokes off of her Sunday total.
The Knights will tee off on the back nine in tomorrow's final round starting at 9:50 a.m. ET. The Knights will play alongside UAB and Southern Miss for the second straight day.
