HATTIESBURG, Miss. (UCFAthletics.com) - Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) stands in a tie for fifth place after shooting an opening round 72 to lead the UCF women's golf team's participation at the Conference USA Championship. The event is being played through Tuesday and hosted by Southern Miss at the par-71, 6,144-yard Cranebreak Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Overall UCF shot a 310 (+26) over today's 18 holes of play to tie the homestanding Golden Eagles for eighth place. Event favorite Tulane played true to form today and leads the field by five strokes after one round with a 290 (+6).
Detlefsen played a steady round on Sunday with 14 pars in all, including pars on eight of her final nine holes, a run broken up only by a birdie on the par-three seventh hole. She stands two strokes behind a three-way tie for the lead at 70 heading into the second round. It is all a part of a big week for the native Minnesotan as Detlefsen was named to the C-USA All-Academic team on Friday for the second consecutive year. Detlefsen earned her bachelor's degree in two years with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
Freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany), after finishing with two birdies on her final three holes, just missed a Top 20 placing for the day as her 76 left her in a tie for 21st place and second amongst the Knight contingent. Fellow freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) turned in a 79 to rank third for UCF. She was followed by senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) who carded an 85 and sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) who shot an 85 on Sunday.
Play will continue with 18 holes on both Monday and Tuesday. The Knights will tee off on the back nine tomorrow starting at 9:50 a.m. ET in pairings alongside UAB and Southern Miss.
