Lex Wood will be inducted into the hall of fame Friday along with Elgin Davis (football), Kim Wyant (women's soccer), Michael O'Shaughnessy (football) and the late Wayne Densch. Wood began the UCF men's tennis program in 1970, and served as the Knights' head coach for the next six seasons. His squads went a combined 102-46, including an impressive 30-4 mark in 1977, his final campaign.
Wood recently discussed his induction to the hall of fame and his memories of his time at UCF.
What are your top memories from your time at UCF?
"Just being able to work with an outstanding group of men. They practiced hard and played hard and were a really great group to be around."
What does being inducted into the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame mean to you?
"That's a big question. Obviously, it is an honor and the players are the ones who should really get the honor. I think that being a coach is one thing, but working with the young people and recognizing the honor of it means I sure need to express my gratitude towards the players themselves. It is an honor."
What does it mean to you to see the success and growth of UCF Athletics in recent years?
"Continuation of a program is a little bit like having a child. You want to see that it does well and it survives, that the people are committed to both the academic and the sports side. From what I understand the athletes have a healthy balance between the two. Not everybody is always perfect or maintains a perfect balance but that to me is totally important. I think the president of the university is very motivated and the football coach is very motivated to maintaining that balance. I think that permeates through the entire athletic department that athletes should honor both the academics and the sports commitment. So I like that."
