Orlando, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - An unfamiliar Florida baseball program will step foot on the UCF campus Tuesday when the Miami Hurricanes invade Orlando to meet with the Knights at 7:05 p.m. on Bright House Sports Network. UCF and UM have not squared off on the diamond since 1995, while the Hurricanes will make their first appearance at UCF since Feb. 11, 1990.
Miami served as one of UCF's very first opponents as the two squads faced off three times during the Knights' inaugural 1973 season. But it was the Hurricanes who led the series and are 21-4 going into Tuesday's tilt. And they have only met 14 times dating back to 1985 when the Black and Gold moved to Division I.
Known as the Florida Tech Goldsox in its early seasons, UCF earned its first win over the Hurricanes in 1974 in Coral Gables, then shutout UM in Orlando, 1-0, in 1975. The Knights also claimed victories in Coral Gables in 1985 and 1995. That triumph in '95 marked the last time UCF and UM would meet, that is until 2010.
Tuesday's clash will be the first of two games between the Knights and Hurricanes this year, as they will collide in South Florida March 23.
While the two programs have a solid history of success and NCAA Tournament appearances, the battle on the mound also will be between a pair of freshmen who know each other quite well. UCF lefty Brian Adkins and UM southpaw Steven Ewing were teammates at Orlando's University High School last year, but will be on opposing sides on Tuesday.
Season tickets and Flex Packs for the 2010 campaign are already on sale, and reserved bleacher seats are only $150. Faculty/staff, youth and senior season tickets are $99. To purchase tickets, call 407-823-1000 or visit UCFAthletics.com.
