Women's Golf Wraps Up Play in Athens

ATHENS, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) was UCF's best finisher by four strokes over 54 holes to pace the Knights women's golf team this weekend at the Liz Murphey Classic at the par-72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens. The strong field included 12 Top 25 teams amongst its 23 members.

Overall UCF shot a 317 on Sunday, improving its overall team score through each of the event's three rounds. UCF's overall total of 974 (+110) placed it in 21st place for the competition. No. 4 Duke obliterated the field with an 889 (+25), winning by a 21 stroke margin ahead of No. 6 Alabama which was a distant second with a 910 (+46).

Fontaine closed the event with a 78 on Sunday and was UCF's top shooter over the 54 holes with her 236 (+20). UCF's top shooter each of the past two days however was fellow freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) who fired her second consecutive 77 on Sunday to finish with a 240 (+24).

Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) was third amongst Knights in Athens with a 248 while senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) was fourth with her 250 and sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out UCF's contingent with her 261.

The Knights will return to action April 10-11 when they head up I-75 to play in the Gator Women's Golf Invitational in Gainesville.
