AUSTIN, Texas (UCFAthletics.com) - Despite racing with a 15-20 mph tailwind, the UCF rowing team posted eight victories on the second day of the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, Saturday. The varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight squads each tallied two wins apiece for the Knights at the regatta.
In the morning session against Iowa, the Black and Gold's varsity eight team started off the day with a split-second win over the Hawkeyes, crossing the finish in 6:46.0, compared to Iowa's 6:46.9.
The second varsity eight followed suit in the second race, defeating the Hawkeyes by almost four seconds after clocking in at 6:50.5 in front of Iowa's 6:53.8, before the varsity four squad also registered a big win. The team of Stephanie Galo, Kaley Tierney, Nina Morgan, Sheilah Abadines and Sasha Baxter recorded a 7:38.7 time on the course, which was nearly eight seconds ahead of the competition.
UCF's novice squad concluded the morning session with a 16-second victory over the Hawkeyes with a time of 7:04.7.
The afternoon session proved to be almost as successful as the opening one Saturday, as the varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight boats all posted wins over Kansas State. The varsity eight and novice eight squads clocked in nearly 13 seconds ahead of the Wildcats in their respective races, while the second varsity eight crossed the finish line more than 20 second ahead of Kansas State in its race. The varsity four team cruised past Kansas State by 27 seconds to win its contest.
UCF concludes the Longhorn Invitational Sunday when it faces former head coach Leanne Crain and her Oklahoma squad beginning at 9:28 a.m.
