ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The 61st-ranked UCF men's tennis team claimed its second straight win Monday afternoon after a long break. The Knights defeated Princeton, 5-2 at the UCF Tennis Complex.
UCF (7-3) swept Princeton in doubles competition. Senior Brock Sakey (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) and sophomore Claudio Romano (Valencia, Venezuela) held off Coleman Crutchfield and Alex faust at No. 3, 8-2, while senior Marc Rocafort (Barcelona, Spain) and junior Blaze Schwartz (Pensacola, Fla.) clinched the point for UCF at No. 1, with an 8-2 victory over Yohei Shoji and Matt Siow. The final doubles win came when senior Johan Beigart (Vaxjo, Sweden) and sophomore Joe Delinks (Falmouth, Mass.) had a 8-7(3) victory over Michael Lin and Matt Spindler at No. 2.
"The team played great through doubles, with a solid finish in singles," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said. "We are in the right place, with the momentum we need to head into our four upcoming home matches."
In singles competition, a 4-3 lead by Sakey in the first set gained the second point for the Knights after play ended early due to Princeton's Matt Siow retiring. At the top spot, Rocafort knocked off Charlie Brosens early on with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. At No. 4 Romano clinched the match for UCF defeating Ryan Kim, 6-3, 6-2.
An additional singles win came from freshman Mario Samson (Miami, Fla.) as he defeated his opponent, Coleman Crutchfield, 6-4, 7-6(3).
UCF will return to action Wednesday against Indiana at 10 a.m. at home. Admission is free to the UCF Tennis Complex.
