NEW ORLEANS, La. (UCFAthletics.com) -The UCF women's golf team fired the best fo its three rounds on Sunday at the Tiger/Wave Classic which was co-hosted by LSU and Tulane at the English Turn & Country Club's par-72 course in New Orleans.
The Knights' 315 on Sunday was a 10-stroke improvement from their Saturday showing as the team landed in 22nd place with a 961 overall in a field that included nine of the nation's top 25 tams. No. 2 Auburn's 889 was good for a seven stroke victory in the event, comfortably outpacing No. 27 TCU's 896.
UCF had a three-way tie for its top finisher as a trio of Knights shot a 241. Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.), sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) all wound up with that score, Fontaine's on the heels of a 77 on Sunday, the team's top round of the day. Freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) was a stroke behind her teammates with a 242 for 54 holes while freshman Sammy Vass (Tain, Scotland) carded a 250 in her team-scoring collegiate debut to round out the Knights' lineup. Vass shaved eight strokes off of her score from Saturday to Sunday.
UCF returns to action March 26-28 when the Knights head to Athens, Ga. For the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic and another solid field.
