SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Strong play by junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) led the UCF women's golf team to a three-way tie for second place after the first two rounds of the annual UCF Challenge on Monday at the par-72, 6,301-yard RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.
Two weeks ago, UCF trailed Georgia State by eight strokes heading into the final round of the Hurricane Invitational but roared ahead to capture the win. UCF presently sits seven strokes behind Georgia State heading into Tuesday's final round of play at the UCF Challenge. The Knights shot 598 (+22) during the day's 36-holes of competition, matching Baylor and Texas A&M. After a first round 301, the Knights shot 297 in the afternoon, continuing their trend of improving play through later rounds.
Detlefsen shot a 73 and then a second-round best 69 for a two round total of 142 (-2), two shots behind individual leader Julia Boland of Texas A&M's 140 (-4). The 69 was a career-low for the Minnesotan. Next for the Knights was fifth-seeded Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) with a 76 and a 71 for a 147 (+3). A week after leading the Knights at the Hurricane Invitational, Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) continued her strong freshman year finishing with a 75 and 77 for a 152 (+8). Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) placed fourth on the team with a 157 (+13), while senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) recorded a 165 (+21).
Competing as individuals, freshman Sammy Vass penciled a 164 (+20), while classmate Sunny Harris (Pensacola, Fla.) marked a 171 (+27) in her collegiate debut.
The third and final round is scheduled to go off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday in Sorrento.
