Orlando, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - On a cold, windy day in Orlando, the UCF softball team dropped its 2010 home opener to in-state rival Stetson, 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex. The loss dropped the Knights' record to 1-3 on the year, while the Hatters improved to 2-2.

"We had very little communication out there tonight," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said after the game. "There were situations when we needed someone to pick us up, and nobody stepped up to take on that responsibility."

Senior Kristina DeMello (Mead, Wash.) suffered the loss in the circle for the Black and Gold, despite totaling seven strikeouts. The hurler allowed seven runs on six hits, while walking five batters in 6.0 innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Junior Diana Rojas (Miami, Fla.) threw one inning of relief in the contest, allowing only two hits to the visitors. Rojas has not been charged with allowing a run in three appearances on the mound in 2010.

The Knights bats were held at bay by Stetson's ace, Amanda Lindsey for a majority of the contest, with junior Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and senior Mary Helen Tyler (Marianna, Fla.) accounting for UCF's only two hits.

After the Hatters scored two runs in the third, Lane cut their lead in half in the bottom of the inning with a booming triple to centerfield that scored senior Morgan Bullard (Columbia, S.C.), who reached base earlier in the inning with a walk.

The triple for Lane was her second of the season and 17th of her career. The speedy lefty is now only three triples away from breaking the Conference USA career record, which currently stands at 19, held by Sarah Martz who played for DePaul from 2001-04.

The contest remained tight through the sixth inning, before the visiting Hatters sealed the victory with a five-run seventh inning.

The Knights are back in action this weekend when they host the UCF Invitational Feb. 19-21 at the UCF Softball Complex. UCF will face off with South Carolina, North Florida, Villanova, Troy and Florida A&M during the event. The Black and Gold's first game of the tournament is set for 3:30 p.m. against the Gamecocks.

Season tickets for the 2010 season are only $40 and are on sale now, while single-game tickets are also available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased online at UCFAthletics.com or through the Athletics Ticket Office by calling (407) 823-1000.
