Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) and freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) each shot an even-par 72 in Monday's second round to propel the UCF women's golf team into a third place tie at the Hurricane Invitational. The 54-hole event is being contested at the par-72, 6,199-yard Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes.
UCF's 293 matched San Diego State for the lowest score of the day and helped jump the Knights from ninth place entering the round up to a tie for third place with a 36-hole tally of 600 (+24). UCF is eight shots back of event-leader Georgia State's 592 (+16) and four strokes back of San Diego State's 596 (+20) entering Tuesday morning's final round. UCF is tied with Coastal Carolina and has a four stroke cushion ahead of fifth place East Tennessee State and James Madison.
With her 72 today, Fontaine now has five rounds of par or better in her 11 collegiate rounds. UCF's leader with a 75 in Sunday's opening round, Fontaine's 36-hole score of 147 (+3) places her in a tie for seventh place, four strokes back of event-leader Christine Wong of San Diego State. Detlefsen matched Fontaine with a 72 of her own on Monday, moving her into a tie for 18th place in the 89-golfer field with a 151 (+7).
The 72s shot by Detlefsen and Fontaine tied for fourth-best out of the entire field on Monday.
Senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) shot a 75 on Monday to give her a 152 (+8) through two rounds and tie for 22nd place overall. Freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) shot a 74 on Monday, six strokes better than her Sunday tally, to give her a 154 (+10) thus far. Sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) is fifth for UCF with a 160 (+16) while freshman Sammy Vass (Tain, Scotland) has a 162 (+18) competing as an individual.
