CLERMONT, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Junior Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit her 16th career triple Saturday night, but it was not enough as the UCF softball team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 7 Georgia, 12-0, at the NTC Elite Invitational.
The loss evened the Knights' record to 1-1 on the season following their upset victory over Tennessee, while Georgia improved to 2-0 after defeating No. 6 Michigan, 6-4, earlier in the day.
Lane's triple in the first inning was the only hit for the Black and Gold in the five-inning contest, as winning pitcher Sarah McCloud (1-0) kept the Knights' bats at bay all night.
Senior Kristina DeMello (Mead, Wash.) suffered the loss in the circle for UCF to fall to 0-1 on the year. The hurler gave up three earned runs on five hits, while striking out one and walking two in 2.0 innings of work.
Two additional pitchers saw time in the circle for the Black and Gold against Georgia. Junior Ashley Schmitt (Tampa, Fla.) gave up five runs on five hits in 1.0 inning of relief, while fellow junior Diana Rojas (Miami, Fla.) closed out the contest by holding the tough-hitting Bulldogs hitless with one strikeout in 1.0 inning of relief.
Georgia scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, three more in the third and plated an additional two runs in the fourth.
The Knights conclude the NTC Elite Invitational Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against Chattanooga. The game was originally scheduled for 1 p.m., but due to rain cancelations on the opening day of the event, the slate was adjusted to accommodate more games.
