This weekend the UCF women's golf team commences the spring 2010 season by traveling to Miami Lakes, Fla. to participate in the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami.
Eighteen teams including eleven ranked in the Golfweek Top 100 will compete for the Hurricane Invitational title. The 2009 winner was Georgia State, who the Knights will also face during the UCF Challenge, their home tournament on March 1-2.
The tournament is a 54-hole, three-day event at Don Shula's Golf Resort. The golf course is a par-72 and plays to 6,210 yards. Competition will tee off with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start on Sunday, and again on Monday. The final round will be an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday morning. Freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany), sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.), junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.), freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile), and senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) will be on the lineup card for the Knights.
Pinegger will be given the number one spot in the lineup for the second time this season. The freshman won the team's qualifier by five shots, earning head coach Courtney Trimble's confidence. "She came back from break refreshed, with a great attitude, and I hope to see her have a great tournament," Trimble said.
The Knights look to improve their national ranking heading into the UCF Challenge in March. "It always helps to start well and give us a little bit of confidence coming into our home tournament," Trimble said. "I think they've put in the effort and we'll go down there, see what we can do, and hopefully come back with a trophy."
