ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Junior Marshay White's potential game-winning three hit off the back of the rim at the buzzer Friday night, and the unfortunate result meant that her UCF (3-9, 0-3 C-USA) team dropped a hard-fought 49-47 contest to visiting Memphis (9-7, 2-1 C-USA) in Conference USA women's basketball action at the UCF Arena.

UCF lost despite junior Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) tying a career-high with 20 rebounds and the Knights holding a 53-37 edge on the glass, including 24 boards on the offensive end. Cannon stayed out of foul trouble for the first in C-USA play and totaled 37 minutes, but the all-conference player drew constant double teams and managed just eight points.

White led the Knights with a game-high 15 points, but struggled to just a 6-for-16 shooting night. She was not alone in her struggles, as UCF cooled down considerably after a torrid start to shoot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field.

UCF hit four three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes against the Memphis zone defense and led 21-10 halfway through the opening period. Junior point guard Angelica Mealing (Decatur, Ga.) already had five assists, and the Knights were making it look easy against the Memphis defense.

It was anything but easy over the final 30 minutes, which saw UCF hit just 10-of-50 field goal attempts, including 2-for-15 from long range. The hosts scored just 28 points over the span, and subsequently saw their home conference winning streak end at eight.

Due to impressive halfcourt defense, the Knights trailed by only one at the break and still had an opportunity to win late in the game.

Cannon scored all eight of her points after halftime, including a pair of free throws with 1:54 remaining to even the game at 47 apiece. After a defensive stop, the Knights had a chance to take the lead with 33 seconds left, but a White three-pointer was blocked by Taylor Mumphrey.

That set the stage for the Tigers' Brittany Carter, who entered leading the league in scoring at 18/7 points per game. UCF had bottled her up throughout the game, holding the guard to just five points on 2-of-12 shooting. Carter had one more chance, however, and took advantage by canning the eventual game-winning jumper with seven seconds left.

After shooting over 51 percent in the first half, Memphis was held to just 8-for-29 in the second, allowing UCF to stay close despite the offensive woes.

It was the second-straight game UCF put just one player in double figures. Inserted back into the starting lineup, Mealing had seven points, seven rebounds and six assists. Junior Chelsie Wiley (Riviera Beach, Fla.) knocked down her 100th career three-pointer in the game and also finished with seven.

Mumphrey scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers.

The homestand also includes the 10K Gold Rush, a nationally-televised ESPN2 game on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m. against UAB. The Knights need your help to pack the UCF Arena and set a new attendance record. Tickets will be free for all fans in attendance.
