Orlando, Fla. (www.UCFAthletics.com) - During the course of its 11-game schedule this season, the UCF football team has continued to adjust and improve, getting used to a new quarterback, a new offensive coordinator and a completely revamped secondary after the graduation of four seniors. One of the players that have had to make adjustments throughout the season to help the Knights be successful is junior Derrick Hallman.

A linebacker in 2008, Hallman moved to safety prior to the season to help the young secondary before moving back to linebacker before the Knights hosted Memphis. Solid in both spots, Hallman has helped UCF to five-straight Conference USA victories since returning to linebacker and is currently second on the team with 73 tackles.

Now on his way to a bowl game and preparing for Saturday's last regular season game at UAB, Hallman discussed the season Wednesday with UCFAthletics.com.

What has allowed you to transition so seamlessly between the two positions of linebacker and safety?
I always try to be the best in both positions. Whether I'm in the secondary or playing linebacker it's important that I always try to do my best. At the beginning of the season I set goals and that keeps me going everyday - hoping to obtain those goals.

What is the biggest difference in the positions?
They're both very physical positions. I'd say the only real major difference is your first step. As a safety, your first step is backwards and at linebacker your first step is forwards. At both positions, you're very involved in the passing game.

What does it mean to you to be third in the nation in rushing defense behind only Texas and Alabama?
That is extremely special. It gives us that mentality that no matter who you are, we're ready to play.

Who is the team's defensive MVP and why?
I'd have to name a few players - Corey Hogue, Bruce Miller, Travis Geathers and Terrell Troup. Each player has a key role in making UCF the third in the nation in rushing defense. Hogue's role is crucial because he has so much responsibility with the calls and makes all the checks. Miller's important because he's the biggest playmaker with 10 sacks. We all work well together to create our strong defense.

You were able to move back to linebacker because of the development of Michael Greco and Kemal Ishmael. How would you assess each of them?
I knew from day one that Ishmael was going to be a great player. He impresses me every time he takes the field. Greco is an athlete, he could play any position. Once he got his feet wet playing a new position after being at quarterback for so long, he really got comfortable with his new position at safety.

What problems do Joe Webb and the UAB offense present?
A running quarterback always gives you problems. Joe Webb is a great player in rushing as well as in passing. I've seen him on film and he will certainly be a challenge to contain.

What does it mean to be going back to a bowl game?
It feels good. It's an exciting experience for the seniors. Last year it just was not the same watching all the bowl games on television. The holiday break is much better with a bowl game in sight.

UCF has seven wins. What will it take to get an eighth?
Focus and preparation just like any other game, but this will be the last regular-season game for the seniors. We want to win this for them.
