UCF Student-Athletes Graduate at High Rate

Nov. 18, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. - The NCAA announced the 2009 Graduation Success Rate study and UCF student-athletes have been very successful in the classroom.

UCF's multi-year GSR for all student-athletes on scholarship stands at 76-percent, a number that continues a consistently high trend for the Knights whose GSR number stood at 75 in 2006, 74 in 2007 and 76 in 2008 as well.

The report also specifically analyzes the "first time in college" graduation rate based on a six-year window to graduate. These 2009 ranking assess the performance of the 2002-03 entrance class and the Knights ended up graduating 67-percent of those student-athletes on time. This is a significant improvement from the 59-percent figure that UCF held last fall and 47-percent the year before. In fact, at 67-percent, UCF student-athletes graduated at a better rate than the University as a whole which graduated 63-percent of students who first enrolled in college in 2002-03.

UCF's first time in college graduation rate, which is also the federal graduation rate, for both student-athletes and the campus as a whole exceeds the national averages of 64 and 62-percent, respectively.

These numbers are expected to rise in the upcoming years as UCF's APR (Academic Performance Rate) has remained high for the past few years. UCF's APR for all 16 varsity sports was 925 or better, a claim that only 38 public Football Bowl Subdivision schools can make. UCF's all-sports overall APR of 962 placed it third in the state of Florida.

"I am very proud of the direction that we are heading in academically," says Mark Gumble, Director of Academic Services For Student-Athletes (ASSA). "The commitment that we have received from both the University and athletics association has allowed these rates to rise and our high APR the past few years only means that the GSR will continue to climb over the next few years."
