ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - With the start of the women's basketball season quickly approaching, UCF junior Emma Cannon (Rochester, N.Y.) earned another honor Tuesday when she was named to the Mid-Major Preseason All-American Third Team by Full Court Press. Less than two weeks ago, Cannon was named the Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year.
The UCF junior was one of only two C-USA players named among the top-25 mid-major players, joining Jareica Hughes, who was selected to the second team. Hughes, the two-time defending C-USA Player of the Year, was one of numerous top level players Cannon beat out for C-USA's top preseason award.
Alyssa Clark of Middle Tennessee State was named the Mid-Major Preseason Player of the Year. Clark, the nation's leading scorer a season ago, and Cannon will do battle in the season opener for both team on Nov. 15 at MTSU.
Cannon averaged 15.5 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in 2008-09 while leading the Knights to a second-place finish in C-USA. Her 393 rebounds, a single-season UCF school record, were the second most ever pulled down by a C-USA player, and she also ranked fifth nationally in rebounds per game.
With a dominant performance in leading UCF to the championship at the C-USA Tournament, Cannon surged into prominence as not only one of the league's best players, but also the nation's. Cannon averaged 14.3 points and 14.5 rebounds per game during the tournament in earning MVP honors. She grabbed a C-USA Tournament record 58 rebounds in the four games.
Entering her junior season, Cannon has 878 points and 654 career rebounds, leaving her just 122 points shy of becoming the 11th member of the UCF 1,000-point club and in third-place all-time in rebounds. Including a league-high 21 last season, Cannon now has 33 career double-doubles.
