DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) won the final two holes of her match to lift the UCF women's golf team to a 3-2 win over Colorado on Tuesday at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach.
No. 11 LSU defeated No. 8 Auburn 3-1-1 to win the overall title in a strong field where 15 out of the 16 teams at least received votes in the Golf World/NGCA preseason Top 25 poll.
Playing at the No. 1 position, Tomko stood all square with the Buffaloes' Dominique Pytlewski through 15 holes of play but won each of the next two to take the critical match 2 and 1. Tomko went 2-1 in the match play portion of the event, also posting a win on Monday against Shamira Marshall of Kent State.
Also winning on Tuesday for the Knights was a pair of freshmen in Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) and Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile). Pinegger took down Stephanie Simich, 2 and 1, at No. 3 while Fontaine was a 3 and 2 winner over Emily Talley at No. 4, taking the lead on the fourth hole and never looking back. Pinegger was 1-1-1 at the event, also halving her match yesterday against North Carolina's Margaret Pentrack.
The Knights will take a couple of weeks off and return to action Sept. 25-27 at the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
