DAYTON ABEACH, Fla. - Freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) shot an even-par 72 in the second round of the day to lead the UCF women's golf team's performance on Sunday at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach.
In a loaded field with 15 teams which at least received votes in the preseason coaches poll, UCF carded a two-round score of 635 on Sunday to place 16th overall. The two rounds of stroke play on Sunday sets the stage for three rounds of match play beginning Monday morning. As the No. 16 seed, UCF opens up against ninth-seeded Kent State in the opening round of the consolation bracket.
Fontaine coupled the 72 from the afternoon round with an 80 in the morning for a 152 (+8) which placed her in a tie for 37th overall. Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) was second for UCF with a 158 (+14). She was followed for the Knights by freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) with a 162 (+18), senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) with a 163 (+19) and sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) with a 170 (+26).
The first two rounds of match play will be held on Monday and the third and final round on Tuesday morning. The winner and loser of the match between UCF and Kent State will face either No. 12-seed North Carolina or No. 13-seed Georgia State on Monday afternoon. The other side of the consolation bracket features Duke, Colorado, TCU and Ole Miss.
