Women's Golf to Open 2009-10 Season on Sunday

ORLANDO, Fla. - Fresh off of two straight NCAA Regional appearances, the UCF women's golf team will open its 2009-10 season on Sunday amongst a similarly regal collection of teams when it heads to Daytona Beach for the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships, hosted by the National Golf Coaches Association, at the LPGA International Legends Course.

The field features eight teams ranked in the Golf World/NGCA Preseason Top 25 Poll in No. 7 Alabama, No. 8 Auburn, No. 9 Virginia, No. 10 Duke, No. 11 LSU, No. 14 Georgia No. 15 North Carolina and No. 24 Kent State. In addition to the eight ranked teams, seven other teams, including UCF, received votes in the poll bringing the total to 15 out of the 16 participants.

The event includes 36 holes of stroke play on Sunday, after which the teams will be divided into two eight-team brackets for a match play tournament. The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played on Monday and the finals on Tuesday for a total of five competitive rounds in three days.

UCF will line up behind one of the team's three freshmen, Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) for this season-opening event. Senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium), sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.), freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) and junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) round out UCF's lineup for the weekend.
