Women's Soccer Preps for LSU, FIU in Tampa

Sept. 3, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Coming off a 3-2 win over then-No. 10 Duke, the UCF women's soccer team hopes to continue its momentum this weekend at the USF Tournament in Tampa. The Knights will meet LSU Friday at 5 p.m. and Florida International Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The victory over the Blue Devils boosted UCF's record this year to 2-1-0 with its only loss coming at the hands of No. 1 North Carolina. Senior Courtney Whidden ventured off the bench vs. Duke to post two goals and currently leads the Knights with five shots on net in 2009. Sophomore Stacie Hubbard scored the game-winner in the 87th minute en route to being selected as a CollegeSoccer360.com Performer of the Week.

LSU opened the season ranked 25th in the country before falling to Memphis 2-0 Aug. 21. It bounced back to shut out Southern Miss 3-0 a week later. The Tigers, who earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and had a 14-4-2 record, have outshot the competition 22-14 this year.

This Friday's clash with the Knights will be the first time the schools have met on the pitch.

For Florida International, it stands at 1-1-1 after starting 2009 with a 3-0 win over Stetson, a 3-0 loss to Florida and a 0-0 draw against Florida Gulf Coast. The Golden Panthers have given up 17 corners compared to taking 11 in their three matches, and have had just one assist on three goals.

UCF and FIU have not played each other since 2006, but it will still be the 33rd match between them as the Knights have tangled with the Golden Panthers more than any other opponent, holding a 25-4-3 all-time lead in the series.

UCF's trip to Tampa ends a four-match road swing as it will be back home to host No. 5 Florida State Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. and USF Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m.
