LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Victoria Tomko (Lontzen, Belgium) and sophomore Elisa Aoki (Bradenton, Fla.) both finished in the top five to lead the UCF women's golf team to a second place finish out of 15 teams in the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational at the University of Kentucky's Big Blue Course.
UCF turned in a 291 on Sunday to finish with a tally of 592 (+20) for the rain-shortened 36-hole event. No. 10 Florida State took home the title with a 587 (+15). The course played as a par-72 on Friday and a par-71 on Sunday. The Knights were a comfortable six strokes ahead of No. 16 Chattanooga and Notre Dame which tied for third place with a 598 (+26).
Tomko fired a 73 (+2) on Sunday to wrap up the event with a 145 (+2) and tie with Coastal Carolina's Jessica Alexander for third place overall in the 82-golfer field. The pair finished two strokes behind co-medalists Macarena Silva of Florida State and Paula Hurtado of Florida International.
Aoki was plus-one for the day with a 72 and plus-three for the tournament with a 146. She landed in a three-way tie for fifth with a pair of golfers ranked in the Golfstat Collegiate Top 100, No. 8 Lacey Agnew of FSU and No. 84 Emma de Groot of Chattanooga.
Freshman Carolin Pinegger (Marquartstein, Germany) matched Aoki's team-low of 72 on Sunday to finish the event in a tie for 24th place with a 151 (+8). Junior Katie Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn.) was six strokes better on Sunday than Friday, carding a 74 to finish with a 154 (+11). Freshman Valentina Fontaine (Santiago, Chile) had a two round 159 (+16) to tie for 54th overall. Competing as an individual, Sammy Vass (Tain, Scotland) carded a 168 (+25), improving her score 10 strokes from Friday to Sunday.
The Knights will be back in action on Oct. 4-5 when they head to Macon, Ga. for the Eat A Peach Collegiate hosted by Mercer University.
